How did you select the subjects?

David selected all the participants. Over many years, he’d accumulated a list of candidates who used the 5 keys.  Often they did not articulate them as such, but their passion for their life’s work, and the mastery of their craft, was clear and vibrant. Not every subject interviewed made the final cut.  The ones that did were able to express the power of being on their path in ways that were accessible to many viewers.

Tell me more about the interviews.

(Susan Burgess-Lent) “An essential approach to any interview is to engage the subject in talking about what excites them.  Sometimes that comes from an unexpected source -- noticing an element of their environment or asking an informed question about their background.  I am, of course, interested already in who they are and what they do. The trick is to be present and listen.

“In Eric Kandel’s case, we spent time talking about his family's escape from The Third Reich in late 1939. The horror of the Holocaust had a great impact on the course of his life.  I think the exchange helped get us into the subject of psychiatry (his first ambition) and how he found his way into neuroscience.

“When I first came into Paul Reed Smith’s office, I commented on the beauty of the colors he chose for PRS guitars.  He launched into an animated explanation of color theory, and thus our rapport was established for more detailed discussion of his work and business.”

Every interview has its own story, and these will be posted in subsequent updates.

How did you get Carlos Santana?

(Susan) “Carlos agreed to an interview because of Paul Reed Smith, believing it an opportunity to pay tribute to the master craftsman of his instruments.  Ultimately, Carlos was game to discuss his music, his family and his next step: multi-dimensional music.  We had a wonderful conversation.”

Will there be a “Volume 2” of THE 5 KEYS TO MASTERY?

We envision several more volumes of THE 5 KEYS, and we’ve already developed a list of possible subjects.

If you would like to recommend someone who is far along a path of mastery in any walk of life, please contact us and share your discoveries.

What are your plans beyond this DVD of THE 5 KEYS TO MASTERY?

(David Lent) “Right now, our focus is on promoting Volume One, getting it into the hands and minds of as many people as possible. I’m planning several regional tours of the US and Canada, beginning in February, in an Airstream trailer. I’ll visit local radio and TV stations, and newspapers, and I’ll make bookstore appearances to spread the word about the 5 KEYS. (The schedule will be posted on our “News” page.)

We’d like to see this DVD used in high schools, colleges, vocational training programs, and prisons.

Beyond The 5 Keys to Mastery and sequel productions, team members are involved in a variety of other activities.

Susan Burgess-Lent (Associate Producer and Business Manager of Dave & Company) is managing a large project to document atrocity crimes in Darfur, and she is relocating to Kenya for a year in conjunction with that effort.

Executive Producer Al Cattabiani created 1409 Entertainment, a company dedicated to developing, producing, and financing film, television and video programming with uplifting themes.

Do you apply THE 5 KEYS TO MASTERY in your own lives?

(David) “In every way I can. For instance, on my desk is a luscious photo on which I’ve written: “the view from our cottage in the Caribbean.” I am also creating a digitally manipulated photo of me sitting next to Oprah as she holds THE 5 KEYS TO MASTERY DVD with an AHA! expression on her face and says: “Now THAT’S what I’m talkin’ about!”

That’s just key #4. I use each of the keys every day. It becomes a way of life.

For further details on applying the 5 keys, see the “Making the 5 Keys.
